2015 MACBOOK PRO RAM UPGRADE 32GB HOW TO
Here’s how to upgrade RAM on your MacBook Pro or MacBook computer: There’s unfortunately no way to upgrade memory for MacBook Air models. If your model allows RAM upgrades, you’ll need to remove the computer’s back cover to access the memory module and perform a MacBook RAM upgrade. Not all MacBooks and MacBook Pros let you upgrade the RAM. For Windows and Linux users, check our guide to upgrading RAM on PC. Turn on your computer and follow the simple procedure described below in the section checking your RAM.
Apple has their own eGPU with support now blackmagic so that may be the best option if you plan to stay in OSX and can go AMD, this may be the best choice. After adding your new RAM, check that you installed it successfully. The onboard card - Radeon 560X only has 4gb though, which is probably not enough if you're doing anything CV related. Most of what I've read tends to indicate the Radeon platform isn't yet up to par with Nvidia, this may be offset by the driver/support issues on OSX. I haven't kept up with AMD and openCL so I can't offer much insight there.
I'd expect the gaming performance to be quite a bit less than the potential the card has just due to the limitations of thunderbolt3 - I don't really know though as that's not my forte. Generally Nvidia cards tend to not be supported all that well by Apple, you can however get it to work.

On OSX - The performance is good/ok in tensorflow/theano - the driver support as mentioned just ok. This wasn't 100% of the reason I decided to forgo OSX tho for ML work, a part of it was that I eventually decided to just mirror the env we'd be using for production anyway - which is all linux based.

One of the main issues I had was with the Nvidia drivers failing after moving from 10.12 -> 10.13, another was with homebrew/pip and theano failing in 10.13 but fine in 10.12. TBH - I've mostly given up on OSX as a development platform after a few too many issues with updates causing havok in my environment, so I dual boot into Linux for most of my work. The performance difference between the i7-8850h and the i9-8950HK is basically negligible can take up a lot of disk - I feel like an external drive can service stuff you don't need to have The price difference between 1TB and 2TB is $1000, and while models/training data/image sets/word embeddings/etc. on your own machine and the included GPU is less than sufficient + Apple's GPU choice is AMD and the amount of AMD resources vs Nvidia is lacking. The eGPU is less important than ram because Uni you probably have access to some resources to do GPUCompute, it is still very useful for cutting down your training time if you plan to do any sort of work with deep learning etc/CUDA etc.

Plus when you start to do this kind of work you end up using a lot of external services (SQL databases, NoSQL databases (MongoDB), Search services (Elastic/SOLR), image processing services etc.) and the like which end up eating memory in the background. Also when you start working with image classification datasets models you're loading into memory can start taking up significant space. I don't think ram is generally more important - but specific to the MBP I run up against the limit on mine with 16gb fairly frequently with the various browser tabs, textMate, VM's, Eclipse, Matlab, GATE etc.
